This is the third collaboration between CCC Art Lab, icon held a group exhibition by artists focusing on contemporary photography, and ROOTOTE, a tote bag specialty store. Artworks｜
This work is a component of the installation “Crushed/copy” presented in 2017. It is an attempt to form a pattern based on the “copy” data of a photographed ready-made product. However, there is always one “crushed” part in every piece, which has been kintsugi, a traditional Japanese technique, applied to it. These crushed areas prevent the pattern from forming, but at the same time, give the piece its unique look.
Even flaws and defects that at first glance might be considered negative are colored by kintsugi, breaking away from ready-made reproductions and creating new value in the monotonous repetition of the work. This work explores the essence of decoration and beauty, and asks the viewer to question the value of objects and their nature in contemporary society.
